Baby Blues Movie Review

BABY BLUES (2008)

Starring: COLLEEN PORCH, JOEL BRYANT, RIDGE CANIPE
Directed by: LARS E. JACOBSON AND AMARDEEP KALEKA

Postpartum Depression... it affects women in many different ways; sadness, emptiness, sobbing, slaughtering your children... Wait did I actually say slaughtering your children????
For the Mom in "Baby Blues" it certainly had this affect.
Colleen Porch play a mom who lives on a secluded farm in Georgia. Her husband is a long distance truck driver who is hardly ever home, but when he is, he is a good dad. Mom has just delivered child number four, but she just doesn't get post Postpartum Depression, she goes stone cold, absolutely off her rocker, Jason Vorhees, Michael Myers, Freddy Kruger freakin' psycho. This is a case even Tom Cruise couldn't solve.
The film absolutely belongs to actress Porch. An obviously beautiful woman, she give a grand performance without ever going over-the-top. You are in actual fear for her children that's how bad she gets, but never hammy, this is DEAD serious.
She slaughters both the younger children first, and spends the last half of the film tracking down the older boy and girl. Does she get them? Can't tell ya, but I will say you cannot take your eyes off the mom the entire film. The movie could have easily gone off in the wrong direction, opting for the standard "is she dead or not", setting up for a possible sequel. This film was independently made, outside Hollywood's idea of "well this made money let's make a sequel" book of filmmaking. I mean how many of you are REALLY looking forward to SAW V.
Come on you executives in Hollywood. Take time out and see some of these independent films that are being made by some very talented filmmakers. How long can you ignore the fresh ideas they have, and you keep churning out junk, TV show retreads, and sequels.
I rarely go the movies to see films anymore, the best are made by independent directors who are fortunate enough to at least get a direct to video deal when they really should be given a decent budget and see what they can do with it in Hollywood. I myself will pass on SAW V this year because 3 and 4 were junk, and I refuse to add to the cash machine just because I have fond memories of 1 & 2.
My Rating: 4 Skulls
